We are offering a series of short, Zoom-based training sessions for 2024/25.
Open to all AT teachers and final semester students. Numbers of attendees will be limited, but all sessions will be recorded and available later.
Join our mailing list and be the first to hear about the next workshop.
As we continue with our work with children and young adults, occasionally new material interests us. When it also proves to be relevant to our work we like to share it during our training courses. This can mean that teachers from previous DS courses miss out on this information. Our idea is to run occasional on-going training sessions over Zoom to introduce these ideas to less recent graduates and to explore them in more depth with everyone. One example would be Sue's exploration of emotional intelligence and the follow-up presentation and exploration about how recent theories and neuroscience teachings relate to some of our understanding of AT principles. There is also no reason why these sessions could not be open to anyone who is interested, not just teachers who have trained with us.
There will be a small charge for these sessions. The sessions will be recorded and available to view afterwards. If you are unable to attend a session you will be able to view the recording for a small fee - see below.
A continuation of our work on emotional intelligence.
At this workshop we will take a close look at the A-Team. There will be an opportunity to look at our own adventures in managing our emotions and to try some practical exercises.
If you were not at the previous workshops on emotional intelligence we will give you access to the recordings once you have enrolled into this workshop. It will be necessary to view these first if you want to get the full benefit of this workshop.
As usual spaces are limited, book early to avoid disappointment!

Judith and Sue will delve deeper into Emotional Intelligence.
Last time we looked at some of the current neuroscience and how we help pupils to cultivate emotional intelligence. This time Judith will lead us in some activities that will connect us to thought, touch, movement and breath. This will help us to find a sense of time, space and ease. We will explore giving meaning to our principles, inhibition, habit and direction, helping us to befriend ourselves and co-regulate with others.
Join Judith and Sue for an exploration of emotional intelligence. This is an area that is very significant when working with children and young people. Learning about emotional intelligence helps our understanding of what is happening in a lesson with our pupils and, most importantly, with ourselves.
Some understanding, or even consideration of emotional intelligence can be a big help in understanding certain situations. For example: why someone is behaving in a way that we find challenging and why it might be that we find this behaviour challenging anyway.
We will look at questions such as:
What are emotions?
What purpose do they serve?
What is emotional intelligence?
Can it be cultivated and if so, how?
We intend this to be a stimulating and fun workshop with space for you to raise questions and to share your experiences.
Based on the conversations that emerged during a recent Zoom meeting for DS graduates, we all agreed that the best topic for the first of these on-going trainings would be to look at some very practical ways of dealing with the real-world management of children and young people in a teaching situation.
Our regular AT training courses do not usually prepare us for the special challenges that, say, a group of rowdy 5 year olds, or very bored and disengaged teenagers present us with! Such situations are certainly challenging in the moment, but can also bring up our own stuff and maybe even present us with some challenging questions about ourselves. All of which is also very relevant to any discussion about emotional intelligence! We therefore feel that starting by looking at any specific examples of crowd-management or other challenges that you bring to the meeting, would be a nice, practical way of laying the ground-work for looking more deeply into emotional intelligence etc. in the future. Plus it would hopefully be helpful and supportive of your work right now.
